Frequently asked questions
What is the Qibla?
The Qibla (القبلة) is the direction that Muslims face during their daily prayers (Salah). It points towards the Kaaba — the cube-shaped structure at the center of Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Every Muslim, regardless of where they are in the world, must face the Qibla when praying.
How is the Qibla direction calculated?
We use the Great Circle method — the most accurate Islamic and mathematically correct way to calculate Qibla. It finds the shortest path along the Earth's surface (a sphere) between your location and the Kaaba. This is calculated using the spherical law of cosines and gives the exact bearing from true North.
Is a compass facing slightly off still valid for Salah?
Yes. Scholars agree that you must face the direction of the Qibla (jiha), not the exact point of the Kaaba. A slight deviation of a few degrees does not invalidate Salah. This is particularly applicable for people far from Mecca, such as in Europe or America, where precision to the exact degree is not required for the prayer to be valid.
Why does the Qibla direction vary by country?
Because the Earth is a sphere, the shortest path (great circle) from different locations to Mecca follows different angles. For example, from Pakistan, the Qibla is roughly West-Northwest. From the UK, it is to the Southeast. From Indonesia, it points West. This is why the Qibla direction must be calculated specifically for your location.
How accurate is this Qibla finder?
Our calculator is accurate to within 0.1 degrees, using the exact coordinates of the Kaaba (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E) and the Great Circle formula. The accuracy of the result also depends on your GPS or city-search precision. GPS detection gives the most accurate result.
About the Qibla
The obligation to face the Qibla is established in the Quran (2:144, 2:149, 2:150). Initially, early Muslims faced Al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, but the Qibla was later changed to the Kaaba in Mecca. This change is known as Tahweel al-Qibla, and it occurred approximately 17 months after the Hijra (migration to Medina).
The Kaaba is the house of Allah built by Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) and his son Ismail (عليه السلام). It is the most sacred site in Islam and the spiritual focal point toward which 1.8 billion Muslims direct their prayers five times a day, wherever they are in the world.
